FAQ

Question: Can I Do Yoga Even Though I'm Not Flexible?

Answer: If you have tight muscles, yoga is just the thing to loosen you up! The point of yoga is to become stronger and more flexible over time while “de-stressing”. Yoga is a personal practice that adapts to fit the needs of individuals and yama studio believes in helping people modify postures rather than molding people into postures.

Question: Can men practice Yoga?

Answer: Until very recently yoga was practiced exclusively by men! You are welcome in yama’s yoga classes. Yoga will improve your flexibility and increase your strength so you can avoid those “weekend warrior” injuries. As a matter of fact since yoga has been practiced by men for so long, many of the poses make more sense for a man's body. For example, some require a lot of upper body strength, which women often lack at first.

Question: Can I Do Yoga at Home?

Answer: We at yama encourage you to develop a home practice. Beginner and All Level classes are a great way to create a sense of comfort and ease with the basics so you can do a practice even on the days you can’t get to the studio!

Question: What is a “Yoga Practice”?

Answer: Yoga teachers may ask you about "your practice". This means your individual home practice as it develops over time. The wonderful thing about yoga is that you can vary your practice as you become more comfortable with what Yoga can do for you. You can create a challenging practice on days you feel great or do a gentler more relaxed practice on days when you are feeling overwhelmed. Yoga can meet all practitioners at the level of their needs. Creating a personal practice is a daily discipline that encourages a noncompetitive spirit in class. One of the most liberating things about yoga is giving yourself time to let go of the ego and accept yourself and your colleagues in class and with that acceptance comes long lasting change and peace of mind.

Question: What happens in a Yoga class?

Answer: Classes at yama studio begin with centering and breathing practices before moving into the more physical parts of yoga. The posture practice portion of the program begins with a warm-up, followed by more challenging postures appropriate to the level of class that’s being offered. As the class winds down, a series of cool-down postures are offered that end wih the most important of all postures “savasana”. This period of lying down at the end of the class is vital to the body-mind and spirit being able to integrate the experience of the preceding postures. Following your integration, you will be invited to sit up and the teacher may close the class by inviting you to chant “Om” three times. Classes may close with an inspirational reading or simply by saying “Namaste”. Namaste means “The Light of the Divine dwelling in me recognizes the Light of the Divine dwelling in you”.
